Defeat the darkness by saying YES to the light

“Do not fight to expel the darkness from the chamber of your soul. Open a tiny aperture for light to enter, and the darkness will disappear.” – Saint Porphyrios

Micha sent me this “Be the Bee” video last week. We both agreed it was the perfect conclusion to our mini-series on light, pain, and darkness.

Essentially, my takeaway from this mini-series is this: there is both light and darkness in our heart, but we do not defeat the darkness with a battle or a war. We defeat the darkness by simply saying YES to the light.

St. Macarius the Great adds to this concept by telling us that our hearts are filled with all things – good and evil – it is, however, up to us to decide what we will focus on. Remember, our thoughts determine our lives.

The heart is but a small vessel, and yet dragons and lions are there, and there likewise are poisonous creatures and all the treasures of wickedness; rough, uneven paths are there, and gaping chasms.

There also is God, there are the angels, there life and the Kingdom, there light and the apostles, the heavenly cities and the treasures of grace: all things are there.

– St. Macarius the Great

I know, I can hardly believe it’s actually that straightforward! Who knew?!

Enjoy the journey. Or, in the (modified) words of Bruno Mars’ new song which is stuck in my head, “Keep up! I’m a dangerous woman with some fasting in my lifestyle!”

I’m feeling the change already.

We are almost there, only 19 days to go!

What are your thoughts?
